Boxer Seeks to Ratify U.N. Treaty That May Erode U.S. Rights

Sen. Barbara Boxer is pushing the Obama administration to move forward with ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a controversial treaty that has never gained much support in the U.S.

Sen. Barbara Boxer is urging the U.S. to ratify a United Nations measure meant to expand the rights of children, a move critics are calling a gross assault on parental rights that could rob the U.S. of sovereignty.

The California Democrat is pushing the Obama administration to review the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a nearly 20-year-old international agreement that has been foundering on American shores since it was signed by the Clinton administration in 1995 but never ratified.

Critics say the treaty, which creates “the right of the child to freedom of thought, conscience and religion” and outlaws the “arbitrary or unlawful interference with his or her privacy,” intrudes on the family and strips parents of the power to raise their children without government interference.

Nearly every country in the world is party to it — only the U.S. and Somalia are not — but the convention has gained little support in the U.S. and never been sent to the Senate for ratification.

That could change soon.

“Whether you ground your kids for smoking marijuana, whether you take them to church, whether you let them go to junior prom, all of those things . . . will be the government’s decision,” said Michael Farris, president of ParentalRights.org. “It will affect every parent who’s told their children to do the dishes.”

This increasingly disturbing topic has far reaching implications but also that most American’s (Conservatives and Patriots not included) don’t want to stand up for anything any more. They have no sand. They don’t want to fight for their rights, why should they, when wonder boy and his anti-American cronies will take care of them.

Wake up America! If those of us whom still care don’t take a stand now, “before”, legislation is passed and they change the Constitution’s first Amendment it will be too late. You see once the change is made “they” will not go back and remove it. We must take a stand together now “before” this happens and if we don’t then the responsibility falls on us.

Like many changes in the last 30 years that occur without a fight this will be just another programming lesson for all those robot Americans out there who do what the government tells them. Because after all they know whats best for us. We’re too stupid to know what is best for us.

This bail out money going to hire illegal immigrants (mostly Mexicans) and the forever permanent alteration of our First Amendment rights should be enough to push us to the very edge. Revolution may be the only solution left. We’ve done it before and won against the tyranny of the British. If called upon and if the last resort we can and should do it again. After all it’s actually mentioned in the Constitution. It’s just that most American’s don’t bother to actually pay attention to the words.

The issues that lead to the Fall of Rome are very much the same as America has experienced in the last few decades leading to it’s own decline. Below is such a comparison.

How Excessive Government Killed Ancient Rome

Beginning with the third century B.C. Roman economic policy started to contrast more and more sharply with that in the Hellenistic world, especially Egypt. In Greece and Egypt economic policy had gradually become highly regimented, depriving individuals of the freedom to pursue personal profit in production or trade, crushing them under a heavy burden of oppressive taxation, and forcing workers into vast collectives where they were little better than bees in a great hive. The later Hellenistic period was also one of almost constant warfare, which, together with rampant piracy, closed the seas to trade. The result, predictably, was stagnation.

Taxation in the Republic and Early Empire

The expansion of the dole is an important reason for the rise of Roman taxes. In the earliest days of the Republic Rome’s taxes were quite modest, consisting mainly of a wealth tax on all forms of property, including land, houses, slaves, animals, money and personal effects. The basic rate was just .01 percent, although occasionally rising to .03 percent. It was assessed principally to pay the army during war. In fact, afterwards the tax was often rebated (Jones 1974: 161). It was levied directly on individuals, who were counted at periodic censuses.

As Rome expanded after the unification of Italy in 272 B.C., so did Roman taxes. In the provinces, however, the main form of tax was a tithe levied on communities, rather than directly on individuals. This was partly because censuses were seldom conducted, thus making direct taxation impossible, and also because it was easier to administer. Local communities would decide for themselves how to divide up the tax burden among their citizens (Goffart 1974: 11).

Oppression and extortion began very early in the provinces and reached fantastic proportions in the later republic. Most governors were primarily interested in acquiring military glory and in making money during their year in office, and the companies which farmed the taxes expected to make ample profits.

As early as the rule of Nero (54-68 A.D.) there is evidence that the demand for revenue led to debasement of the coinage. Revenue was needed to pay the increasing costs of defense and a growing bureaucracy. However, rather than raise taxes, Nero and subsequent emperors preferred to debase the currency by reducing the precious metal content of coins. This was, of course, a form of taxation; in this case, a tax on cash balances (Bailey 1956).

Occasionally, the tax burden would be moderated by a cancellation of back taxes or other measures. One such occasion occurred under the brief reign of Pertinax (193 A.D.), who replaced the rapacious Commodus (A.D. 176-192). As Edward Gibbon (1932: 88) tells us:

Though every measure of injustice and extortion had been adopted, which could collect the property of the subject into the coffers of the prince; the rapaciousness of Commodus had been so very inadequate to his extravagance, that, upon his death, no more than eight thousand pounds were found in the exhausted treasury, to defray the current expenses of government, and to discharge the pressing demand of a liberal donative, which the new emperor had been obliged to promise to the Praetorian guards. Yet under these distressed circumstances, Pertinax had the generous firmness to remit all the oppressive taxes invented by Commodus, and to cancel all the unjust claims of the treasury; declaring in a decree to the senate, “that he was better satisfied to administer a poor republic with innocence, than to acquire riches by the ways of tyranny and dishonor.”

‘We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation has many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military. For those of you who can’t join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas where we would like your assistance:

1. The next time you see any adults talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem – straighten them out.

2.When you witness, firsthand, someone burning the American Flag in protest – straighten them out.

3 .Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise, quietly pull them aside and explain how these veterans fought for the very freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a disabled veteran straightens them out.

4.(GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were. Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDUs) or Jungle Fatigues, telling others that you used to be ‘Special Forces,’ and collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay when you were seven years old. Now, it will only make you look stupid and get your butt kicked.

5.Next time you come across an Air Force member, do not ask them, ‘Do you fly a jet?’ Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such ignorance deserves an butt-kicking (children are exempt).

6.If you witness someone calling the US Coast Guard ‘non-military’, inform them of their mistake – and straighten them out. 7.Next time Old Glory (the US flag) prances by during a parade, get on your damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart. Quietly thank the military member or veteran lucky enough to be carrying her – of course, failure to do either of those could earn you a severe butt-kicking.

8.Don’t try to discuss politics with a military member or a veteran. We are Americans, and we all bleed the same, regardless of our party affiliation. Our Chain of Command is to include our Commander-In-Chief (CinC). The President (for those who didn’t know) is our CinC regardless of political party. We have no inside track on what happens inside those big important buildings where all those representatives meet All we know is that when those civilian representatives screw up the situation, they call upon the military to go straighten it out. If you keep asking us the same stupid questions repeatedly, you will get your butt kicked!

9.’Your mama wears combat boots’ never made sense to me – stop saying it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and therefore could kick your butt!

10. bin Laden and the Taliban are not Communists, so stop saying ‘Let’s go kill those Commies!’ And stop asking us where he is! Crystal balls are not standard issue in the military. That reminds me- if you see anyone calling those damn psychic phone numbers, let me know, so I can go straighten them out!

11. ‘Flyboy’ (Air Force), ‘Jarhead’ (Marines), ‘Grunt’ (Army), ‘Squid’ (Navy), ‘Puddle Jumpers’ (Coast Guard), etc., are terms of endearment we use describing each other. Unless you are a service member or vet, you have not earned the right to use them. Using them could get your butt kicked.

12. Last, but not least, whether or not you become a member of the military, support our troops and their families. Every Thanksgiving and religious holiday that you enjoy with family and friends, please remember that there are literally thousands of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen far from home wishing they could be with their families. Thank God for our military and the sacrifices they make every day. Without them, our country would get it’s ass kicked.’ ‘It’s the Veteran, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.’ ‘It’s the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.’ ‘It’s the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.’ ‘It’s the Military who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.’

13. If you ask a veteran did you serve in a war? Don’t be offended when they say ” no, I served in peacetime ‘because peacetime vets are patriots and don’t need a war to justify serving our country.’ “

14. If you ever see anyone either standing for or singing the national anthem in Spanish – straighten them out.

This is what this country needs more of. I realize it has a Catholic theme but had they made it without making it look like a catholic theme it would have help rally the American spirit in all of us which has died in most of us. Except for the true patriots in this nation. Those of us who believe in the idea of America. Americans are afraid to fight. You have lost the desire. You have stopped believing in yourselves and in America and what it stands for.

Jimmy Doolittle once said “there is nothing stronger then a volunteer”. He said this while on board the USS Hornet in March of 1942 sailing toward Japan for the first air strike after Pearl Harbor.

Our flag was paid for by the blood of Americans. NOT by the liberals. Not by illegal aliens. It was American Marines who planted the flag at Iowa Jima.

Our own country is at fault for allowing this to continue. It if weren’t for the cowardice of our government officials these anti-Americans would be shot or least forced to serve on the front lines. Conscientious Objectors have been around a very long time. Even the Ancient Roman Empire had to deal with these cowards and they did very swiftly. They were simply put to death. Your new assignment won’t mean you can’t be sent out on a combat ship or to a war zone. This can make waiting for a decision on your claim very difficult. During your CO processing, you may decide that you can no longer cooperate with the military. Noncooperation, sometimes called resistance, takes many forms. 8 States Require Obama…

For all of you liberals who think America hasn’t already been conquered without a shot even having been fired here is a warning sign for you. This has been done before during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war. See official story below. The world is watching this election very closely. They want Obama in office because he is untested and weak. He can be easily bent or molded like gumby with ease by terrorist and major foreign powers.

Russia, Iran, South America and many others are watching between now, next Tuesday and in January when the next president is sworn in. If McCain were the next president none of them would dare mess with America because they know he is not to be reckoned with and that he has in fact been fully tested.

Fact not opinion: There are currently (and growing) 12 million illegals in this country murdering Americans by the thousands every year. Don’t believe us, we don’t care, do your homework, it’s all over the news and the Internet and in books in print.

Right now America is it’s weakest in it’s 230 year’s or so history. We are the most vulnerable and the weakest economically that we have ever been. Other nations own our banks and business and most of if not all of our country’s land is there’s because we sold it off to pay debts long ago. Most of if not all of our national parks are not owned by America. We sold them off a long time ago.

Dubai owns some of our parks, banks, businesses and more. Japan owns some of our parks and businesses and more.

If you don’t control immigration and you don’t control your borders. If you allow liberals and gays and illegals to do anything they want in this country then why not just wave a flag of surrender.

If the scheduled joint exercises with the Venezuelan navy take place, the maneuver would be one of Russia’s most provocative exercises in the Western Hemisphere since the Soviet Union supported Marxist guerrillas in Nicaragua and El Salvador — and could entangle the Kremlin in the Monroe Doctrine, which holds that the Europeans should keep out of the American hemisphere.

The chief of Venezuela’s naval intelligence, Admiral Salbatore Cammarata Bastidas, said in a statement that Russian warships, along with 1,000 Russian soldiers, are headed to Caracas in November for a series of military exercises.

The move appears to be a response to the decision by the U.S. Navy earlier this year to re-form the Fourth Fleet to patrol the Caribbean. The Pentagon has justified the re-creation of the fleet, which was disbanded in 1953, as part of an effort to prevent drug smuggling, in light of Venezuela’s decision not to cooperate with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Russian-Venezuelan military effort is also in keeping with Moscow’s newly emboldened foreign policy. Last month, the Russians reportedly sent an aircraft carrier and its attendant fleet to Syria. Moscow is also in the process of selling an advanced anti-aircraft system to Iran, though the final equipment has yet to be shipped to the Islamic Republic. The completion of that weapons sale has the potential to make any future bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities a riskier proposition for both Israel and America.

In his weekly television address, President Chavez of Venezuela said: “Russia’s naval fleet is welcome here. If it’s possible, we’ll stage an exercise in our Caribbean waters.” Anticipating criticism from Washington, he taunted his northern neighbor, saying, “Go ahead and squeal, Yankees.”

Despite Mr. Chavez’s tough rhetoric, the Venezuelan leader has suffered some setbacks in the last year, among them the weakening of the FARC, the Colombian Marxist rebel group that Mr. Chavez has supported.

Nonetheless, the Venezuelan government, flush with cash from its petroleum exports, has indicated that it is seeking to purchase Russian submarines.

The announcement of the military exercises comes as the Bush administration is navigating its response to Russia’s invasion of Georgia, a former Soviet republic that hosts a small American military base.

Over the weekend, Vice President Cheney had particularly harsh words for Russia, calling the recent invasion an “affront to the standards of the civilized world.”

“Though aware of these responsibilities, Russia has yet to meet them,” he said on a visit to Italy. “Indeed, it has taken the opposite course, by recognizing South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states.”

Those words are backed up by American actions: Over the weekend, a U.S. Navy flagship made a port call to the Black Sea city of Poti, Georgia, ostensibly to deliver humanitarian assistance. The arrival of the USS Mount Whitney caught the attention of the new Russian president.

“I wonder how they would like it if we sent humanitarian assistance using our navy to countries of the Caribbean that have suffered from the recent hurricanes,” President Medvedev, who took office in May, said.

Mr. Chavez was one of the few world leaders to support Russia’s invasion of Georgia. He also has called for a Venezuelan-Russian alliance; in 2006, Venezuela signed a series of defense and commercial agreements with Iran.

Barack Obama’s senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency if he wins next week’s election, amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harboring unrealistic hopes of what he can achieve.

The sudden financial crisis and the prospect of a deep and painful recession have increased the urgency inside the Obama team to bring people down to earth, after a campaign in which his soaring rhetoric and promises of “hope” and “change” are now confronted with the reality of a stricken economy.

One senior adviser told The Times that the first few weeks of the transition, immediately after the election, were critical, “so there’s not a vast mood swing from exhilaration and euphoria to despair.”

The aide said that Obama himself was the first to realize that expectations risked being inflated.

In an interview with a Colorado radio station, Obama appeared to be engaged already in expectation lowering. Asked about his goals for the first hundred days, he said he would need more time to tackle such big and costly issues as health care reform, global warming and Iraq.

“The first hundred days is going to be important, but it’s probably going to be the first thousand days that makes the difference,” he said. He has also been reminding crowds in recent days how “hard” it will be to achieve his goals, and that it will take time.

“I won’t stand here and pretend that any of this will be easy — especially now,” Obama told a rally in Sarasota, Florida, yesterday, citing “the cost of this economic crisis, and the cost of the war in Iraq.” Obama’s transition team is headed by John Podesta, a Washington veteran and a former chief-of-staff to Bill Clinton. He has spent months overseeing a virtual Democratic government-in-exile to plan a smooth transition should Obama emerge victorious next week.

The plans are so far advanced that an Obama Cabinet has been largely decided upon, with the expectation that most of his senior appointments could be announced shortly after election day.
